Krav Maga is a highly practical and effective system of self-defence and hand-to-hand
combat. Its techniques rely on the bodies natural reactions and instincts. It’s therefore
quick and easy to learn, and unlike many self-defence systems, operates under the
pressure of real life situations. Krav Maga is a comprehensive system the covers
street orientated striking and ground fighting, defending against armed assault from
knives, guns, sticks and various other weapons, defending holds from chokes to headlocks
both standing and on the ground and tactics for dealing with multiple attackers.
KRAV MAGA TODAY
In the 1980’s Imi’s senior student converted what was a general
set of techniques into a more organised system based on interconnecting principles.
At around this time Krav Maga began to be practised outside of Israel. Krav Maga
is now the Self Defence and hand-to-hand of choice for many police, military, and
special forces units across the world including the FBI and Drug Enforcement Agency.
In these units what doesn’t work may get you killed, so the system is constantly
updated. This means that for the average person there is better self-defence system
available in the world today.
Krav Maga was originally developed by Imi Lichtenfeld for the Israeli Defence Forces
to meet their need for an effective hand-to-hand combat system that soldiers could
easily learn and would translate well to a combat environment. As the Israeli Defence
Forces use both men and women in combat situations the system needed to be practical
enough to be used effectively regardless of a person’s shape or size.
